මෙරට සිනමා ඉතිහාසයේ මුල්ම දේශිය චිත්‍රපට අධ්‍යක්ෂ ලෙස ගෞරවය හිමි විය යුතුව ඇත්තේ “ඩබ්ලිව්. දොන් එඩ්වඩි “ට. ඔහු තැනූ ‘පළිගැනීම’ චිත්‍රපටයයි. එය මුල්වරට තිර ගත වූයේ 1936 වසරේ මැයි මස 19 වැනි දින කොළඹ කොටහේනේ පිහිටි ගෙයිටි සිනමාහලේ. අපේ මුල්ම කතානාද චිත්‍රපටය ‘කඩවුණු පොරොන්දුව ‘දකුණු ඉන්දියාවේ මදුරයෙි නගරයේ උපදින්නේ තවත් වසර නවයකට පසු. රීල් තුනික් නැත්නම් මිනිත්තු 30 කින් යුත් ‘පළිගැනීම’ චිත්‍රපටය නිර්මාණය කිරිම නිසා එඩ්වඩ් ට ලැබුණු කිසිවක් නැහැ. කාලය සමඟ සහමුලින් අමතකව ගිය මේ චිත්‍රපටයට අත්වූ ඉරණම ගැන පසුගිය දවසක අපට දැන ගන්නට ලැබුණා ඒ “දොන් එඩ්වඩ් “ගේ පුතුන් සමග කළ කතාබහකින් . චිත්‍රපටය වසර 88 ක් පිරෙන අද දවසේ අපේ වෑයම ඒ කතාබහ ඔබට ගෙන එන්නයි. මෙම සාකච්ඡාව සම්බන්ධීකරණය කරන ලද සමරවීර ජයතුංග මහතා ට විශේෂ ස්තූතිය පිරිනමමු. “W. Don Edward” should be honored as the first local film director in the history of Sri Lankan cinema. He made the film ‘Paligenima’.(Revenge ) It was first screened on May 19, 1936 at the Gaiety Cinema in Kotahena, Colombo. Our first feature film ‘Broken Promise’ was born in Madurai, South India after another nine years. Edward got nothing for making the 30-minute film ‘Revenge’ without the reel tunic. The other day, we got to know about the fate of this film, which was completely forgotten with time, through a conversation with the sons of “Don Edward”. Today, when the film turns 88 years old, our effort is to bring you that conversation.
